Abstract:
Marine debris washing up on beaches on Bird Island has been monitored since 1989 with over 9,000 items of debris recovered up until present day. In addition to the raw data, a summary of the data by year or by debris description is available. Occasions when no debris was found, or it was not possible to carry out a survey, are recorded in the metadata.
This data is submitted to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) as part of their Marine Debris Programme.

Lineage: | Regular check are carried out to record and remove marine debris from the Main Bay on Bird Island. This is part of CCAMLR's Marine Debris Program. Surveys are carried out once per month during the winter period and once during the summer period, usually at the end of March. Debris type and description are recorded along with weight (kg) and debris size. Debris type is recorded under the categories in CCAMLR's Marine Debris Program. Debris size is categorised as follows: S (Small) < 2.5cm, M (Medium) 2.5cm to 10cm, L (Large) >10cm to 1m, VL (Very Large) >1m. |
