Abstract:
Analysis of shallow ice cores collected in the region of subglacial Lake Ellsworth. Three cores drilled to ~20 m depth. Two cores returned to UK for analysis. One core measured for density-depth in the field, then discarded.
One of the two cores returned to UK has been sent to Bristol University for major anion/cation analysis; the other core is at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and will be analysed for accumulation rate.
Density analysis is complete. Chemical analysis is complete. Accumulation analysis is in progress.

Quality: | Estimated error in calculated density mostly of the order +/-30 kg/m^3 | |
Lineage: | Core drilled to just over 20 m depth using PICO hand drill. Core quality - good Core diameter between 70-80 mm Core cut into a total of 94 sections; mean section length 21.6 cm For each section, length and diameter were measured with ruler and calipers, respectively. For each section, mass measured with an electronic balance. |
