Abstract:
This data contains the model output of three numerical inversions of Pine Island Glacier ice surface velocities performed with the Community Ice Sheet Model (CISM2.0). The first and second simulations are inversions of the 1996 and 2014 velocity, respectively. The third simulation is a sensitivity experiment on the 2014 inversion.
The gridded data consists of the ice surface velocity, basal velocity, basal stress, basal melt rates, and basal water fluxes, calculated for Pine Island Glacier catchment area.
This data was created within the iSTAR-C programme (with NERC grant reference NE/J005800/1).

Data Storage: | The dataset is provided in one zip file (2.1MB), with 5 netcdf files. The netcdf files contain fields for all three simulations (I1996_MC, I2014_ H and I2014_MC, consistent with names used in the referenced paper). The 5 available fields are: - the ice surface velocity, Vels_[YR]_[Geom] , in m/yr. - the ice basal velocity, Velb_[YR]_[Geom] , in m/yr. - the basal traction, Tauf_[YR]_[Geom] , in Pa. - the basal melt rates, bmlt_[YR]_[Geom] , in m/yr. - the basal water fluxes, Bwatflx_[YR]_[Geom] , in m3/yr. In the above field names, [YR] is set to 96 or 14, for the 1996 and 2014 velocity inversions, respectively; [Geom] is set to MC if the inversion used the mass-conserved ice geometry. It is set to DH if the geometry accounts for ice thinning observed for Pine Island Glacier after 2004. See referenced paper for more details. |
