Abstract:
The dataset lists information about boreholes drilled by hot water into Khumbu Glacier, Nepal. Boreholes were drilled in May 2017 and May 2018 to investigate the internal properties of Khumbu Glacier, specifically ice thickness, temperature, deformation and structure, as part of the NERC-funded 'EverDrill' research project. The information provided includes each borehole's ID, length, location (at the time of drilling), elevation and instrumentation.
Funding was provided by the NERC grant NE/P00265X/1 and NE/P002021/1.

Lineage: | Borehole information was collected while boreholes were drilled using a hot-water drill in 2017 and 2018 on Khumbu Glacier, Nepal. Location and elevation were measured with a handheld GPS unit. Borehole depth was measured from the length of drilling hose in the borehole at the time when drilling progress ceased, and confirmed from the length of sensor cable lowered into the borehole, where applicable. Boreholes that were instrumented with sensors (to measure ice temperature, tilt, hydrological information) or that were logged by an optical televiewer (OPTV) are noted. |

Data Storage: | All data are listed in one comma-separated ASCII file (*.csv format), which is ~2 KB in size. The file holds the data for each borehole (rows). 'Drill Site' refers to the EverDrill site on the glacier; 'Borehole #' to the full borehole ID; 'Borehole Length (m)' the full length of each borehole, in metres; 'GPS Location' the location of each borehole (WGS 84); and 'Elevation (m a.s.l.)' the height above sea level of the surface of each borehole, in metres. 'Strings'' lists, where relevant, the type of sensor string the borehole was instrumented with: 'Thermistor' measured ice temperature; 'Tilt' measured ice deformation; and 'Basal Probe' measured hydrological features. If the boreholes were logged using the optical televiewer, a 'Y' is marked in the final 'OPTV' column. |
