Abstract:
Incidences of Antarctic Fur Seals entangled in man-made debris have been recorded at Bird Island since 1988. The majority of entanglements have been Antarctic Fur Seals caught in plastic packaging bands, synthetic line and fishing nets. Where possible these are removed by scientists working at the research base. This data is collected as part of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources's Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP).

| Lineage: | Data are currently collected throughout the year at Bird Island, however in 1988 and 1989 data were only collected during the summer season. Season definitions: Winter - 1st April to 31st October; Summer - 1st November to 31st March. Entanglement severity definitions: Loose - material loose; Tight - material tight but not breaking the skin; Severe - material cutting through the skin; Very severe - material cutting through the skin and underlying fat layer. Age definitions (age may also be given in years): Pup - 0 to 1 year; Juvenile - females 1 to 4 years, males 1 to 6 years; Adult - female older than 4 years, male older than 6 years. CCAMLR forms also include an age category of sub-adult but do not define what to count in this category. CCAMLR advises that in any analysis juvenile and sub-adult categories would probably be combined. All data were collected under permit from the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. All animal handling procedures used were regulated by the British Antarctic Survey Ethical Review Committee in collaboration with Cambridge University and the UK Home Office. |
