Abstract:
Walk-away seismic reflection surveys were conducted in two locations on and to the south of (i.e. on the Solberg Inlet derived meteoric ice shelf unit) the suture zone emanating from the Joerg Peninsula on the Larsen C Ice Shelf, approximately 95 km downflow of the peninsula's tip. The data were collected as part of NERC Project SOLIS.
Funding was provided by NERC Standard Grant 'Present and future stability of Larsen C Ice Shelf', 2008-2011, NERC Reference NE/E012914/1.

Quality: | Raw data are provided and data quality can therefore be readily assessed. Selected bad traces have been removed in assembling the .sgy files, caused by faulty take-outs in the seismic cable used. | |
Lineage: | The seismic reflection data were collected using Pentolite explosive charges deployed in shallow holes drilled with a snow auger, to create 'walk-away' shot gathers. The suture zone gather ('JP-Seis') is aligned perpendicular to ice flow (i.e. south-north) while the Solberg gather ('SI-Seis') is aligned along-flow (i.e. west-east). The Joerg Peninsula location is -62.623506 S, -67.953555 E, 53 m elevation. The Solberg Inlet location is -62.641592 S, -68.004942 E, 55 m elevation. |

Data Collection: | 2 x Geometrics Geode seismographs with 100 Hz vertical geophones, acquired using Geometrics proprietary software MGEOS, recording raw data files in .sg2 format. |
---|
Data Storage: | The acquisition geometry is fully encoded in the .sgy files such that the shot point is fixed at 0 m in each file, and the geophone / trace spacing is specified in metres at increasing positive distance away from the shotpoint, effectively creating a 'walk-away' shot gather at each of the two locations. |
