Abstract:
Seismic refraction experiments were conducted in four locations in the Whirlwind Inlet, Larsen C Ice Shelf, with the main purpose of estimating firn density profiles. The data were collected as part of NERC Project MIDAS. The locations, procedures and raw data files produced along with quality descriptions are all summarised in the observer's log provided along with the datasets.
Funding was provided by NERC Standard Grant 'Impact of surface melt and ponding on ice shelf dynamics and stability', 2014-2017, NERC Reference NE/L005409/1.

Quality: | Raw data are provided and data quality can therefore be readily assessed. Note that there are some bad traces in most data files, caused by faulty take-outs in the seismic cable used. | |
Lineage: | The seismic refraction data were collected with a 14 lb sledgehammer and plastic plate seismic source, using the instrumentation specified below, to create "walk-away" shot gathers. The seismic lines of shot and geophones are aligned with the ice-shelf flow direction, i.e. aligned along a flowline originating from the Cabinet Inlet. No reverse shots were recorded because the firn was layered and laterally homogeneous in each location. Three different geophone patterns were used depending on location. These patterns are described in the file "Project MIDAS 2014-17 NE_L005409_1 Observers Log Nov-Dec15 seismic campaign Overview", and the four .csv files for locations WI-0, WI-45, WI-60 and WI-70 (e.g. "Project MIDAS 2014-17 NE_L005409_1 Observers Log Nov-Dec15 seismic campaign WI-0", etc.) then specify explicitly which geophone pattern was used to generate any particular data file. |
