Abstract:
In 2016, a series of ice shelf cavity bathymetry point measurements were
made across Larsen C Ice Shelf, West Antarctica. The sites were selected
to address deficiencies in the coverage provided by existing data sets. A
hammer and plate seismic source was used. Seismic reflection data were
recorded on 24 receivers at 10 m interval and 30 m offset. Sea bed
reflections are observed at all sites. Surface elevation measurements are
provided to allow estimation of ice thickness when an ice base reflection is
not visible.

Quality: | Raw data are provided and data quality can therefore be readily assessed. Data quality will vary from shot to shot due to the nature of using a hammer source. |
|
Lineage: | The seismic reflection data were collected using a hammer and plate source into 24 surface receivers at 30 m offset and 10 m interval. At each site, around 20 single blow records were collected as well as an on-site stack of 10 hammer blows. Seismic data were recorded at 8 kHz sample rate. The Fresnel zone is dependent on ice and water column thickness and therefore site specific. The dual frequency GPS data were collected with a Trimble R7 GPS unit at each site to obtain an accurate surface elevation. |

Data Collection: | The seismic reflection data were collected with 1 x Geometrics Geode seismograph with 40 Hz vertical georods. The dual frequency GPS data were collected with a Trimble R7 GPS unit. |

Data Storage: | Raw data are provided in SEG-2 format as exported by the Geometrics Geode unit. The shot and receiver geometry is encoded in the data header. However, the site coordinates are not included in the data file headers but are provided in a separate .csv metadata file. At each site, around 20 individual hammer blows are recorded as single files. An on-site stack record of 10 shots was also recorded and is provided in a separate single file. The dual frequency GPS data are provided as raw Trimble (.t01), and the same data converted to RINEX format (.16o & .16n). |
