Abstract:
This dataset comprises the annual count of chinstrap penguins arriving to Signy Island each breeding season, from 1996 to 2020. Penguins arriving at the beach in mid to late November (the austral summer) were counted. This monitoring contributes to the CCAMLR (Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP) and is part of the annual seabird Long Term Monitoring carried out by the British Antarctic Survey at Signy Island.
Ecosystems component of BAS Polar Science for Planet Earth Programme, funded by NERC.

Quality: | Counts are ideally continued every 4-5 days - the number of sessions vary between years depending on the time it takes for all penguins and researchers to arrive. Years with no data indicate personnel had not arrived to Signy Island in time to carry out this activity. | |
Lineage: | Chinstrap penguins were counted as they arrived at Signy Island in mid/late November following CCAMLR (CEMP) Standard Method A1A. Counts start when the first adults are observed travelling from the beach to the colony or resting on the beach (indicating they had just arrived). Ideally, counts are made every fourth or fifth day, starting with the first available five-day period after adults are first observed in the chinstrap chronology colony (C69 and later C66, see CCAMLR (CEMP) Standard Method A9). The count sessions continue until either four have been carried out or chronology colony counts indicate most/all penguins have arrived. |
