Abstract:
This dataset contains the imagery for two time-lapse cameras installed at two chinstrap penguin colonies, Pygoscelid antarcticus, around Signy Island. The camera imagery are used to monitor nest attendance of chinstrap penguins at Signy. These cameras passively record colony attendance by taking automatic images each day, throughout each year. This dataset includes imagery for the years 2015-2022.
This dataset is part of a larger network of time-lapse cameras monitoring seabirds on Signy Island.
This monitoring contributes to the CCAMLR Ecosystem Monitoring Program (CEMP) and is part of the annual seabird Long Term Monitoring Science carried out by the British Antarctic Survey at Signy Island.
This work was funded by Natural Environment Research Council (UK) core funding to the British Antarctic Survey.

Quality: | Each image includes a time-stamp and the temperature at the time when the photo was taken. Imagery is not always continuous throughout the year and there may be gaps between photo timestamps. Photos where fog, ice, or darkness obscures the colony are included in the dataset, and can be filtered depending on the required use. Images that are completely blurry or dark have been removed. |

Lineage/Methodology: | Two time-lapse cameras installed on fixed mountings monitor chinstrap penguins' nest attendance at two chinstrap penguin colonies at Signy Island (one camera per colony). These static cameras are positioned to capture a minimum of twice-daily images of selected colonies for the species. The cameras operate daily all year-round with the timing of the daily images pre-programmed. The cameras are annually serviced in the field where they are located. Memory cards containing images are recovered annually from both cameras. |
