Abstract:
Profiles of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation and the rate of thermal variance dissipation were observed beneath Thwaites Glacier in the grounding zone region of the Eastern Ice Shelf as part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration MELT project. Using a Rockland Scientific VMP-250 turbulence profiler, five individual profiles were obtained in a 20-hour period between 10th-11th January 2020.

Quality: | The instrument was factory calibrated prior to deployment. Shear data have a stated accuracy of 5% and a resolution of 10-3 s-1. High-resolution FP07 micro-temperature data have a stated accuracy of 0.005°C and a resolution of 10-5°C. Pressure data have an accuracy of 5% of the full-scale, with a resolution of 5×10-4 bar. Standard resolution temperature and conductivity data have an accuracy of 0.01°C and 0.01 mS cm-1, respectively, and a resolution of 0.001°C and 0.001 mS cm-1, respectively. Data from each probe has been calibrated using the parameters in the corresponding instrument configuration file. Data from all shear probes was contaminated with instrument noise and is considered unusable. | |
Lineage: | The data was collected using a Rockland Scientific VMP-250 turbulence profiler. The raw binary data collected by the instrument was converted into physical units using the Rockland Scientific ODAS data processing MatLab Library v4.4 (2019-06-05). |

Data Storage: | 5 Rockland Scientific .p binary files containing the raw data recorded by the VMP-250 turbulence profiler. These data can be processed using the ODAS data processing Matlab library that is available from Rockland Scientific. The raw .p files are complemented by the instrument configuration files (.cfg), which contain the comprehensive metadata and calibration parameters required for independent reprocessing of the raw data records. 5 NetCDF files containing processed data that has been converted into physical units using the ODAS data processing Matlab library and the corresponding instrument configuration file. The data variables in each NetCDF file are divided into two groups according to their resolution: FAST for data recorded at 512 Hz, and SLOW for data recorded at 64 Hz. |
