Abstract:
This is a sonic log of a borehole drilled by hot water to 120 m (Site 1) on Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula. The borehole was drilled in December 2022 to investigate the internal properties of a suture zone (Site 1) and a meteoric ice band (Site 2) of an ice shelf, as part of the NERC-funded RiPIce (Rift Propagation for Ice sheet models) research project.
NERC standard grant NE/T008016/1.

Quality: | Data are unaltered from those logged in the field. Centralisers were not used during logging due to uneven borehole width in the uppermost firn layers. Missing data are presented as -999. | |

Lineage: | The dataset is a sonic log from a borehole drilled to 120 m (Site 1) on Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctica, in December 2022. It was acquired using a slim-hole triple sonic borehole probe manufactured by Robertson Geologging Ltd, which is comprised of one transmitter that radiates a high-frequency acoustic wave detected by three receivers on the probe. Boreholes were logged whilst the sonic probe was travelling up the borehole. |

Data Storage: | The data is stored in a comma-separated ASCII file (*.csv format). The file name consists of RIPICE, the site number, and SonicLog. The depth (in metres) each measurement is made at is presented in the first column. Columns two to four present the transit time (in microseconds) between transmission and detection at receivers one to three, respectively. |
